Accessories

In order to provide a good meal for your company, there are necessary cookware and appliances to have. Accessories for camp cooking consist mainly of containers for leftovers or condiments. Containers of varying sizes and materials can be used depending on the type of food one wishes to store. Dry foods would most likely belong in a stainless steel container that is airtight to prevent it from going stale. Hot dogs or hamburgers could be fine in plastic tupperware or cookware.

Appliances

Appliances

The appliances that are convenient to have on a camping trip are coffee makers and hot water boilers. Camping gear is designed to carry these appliances in compact carrying cases such as stuff bags and daypacks. A boiling pan is an appliance that would be used to heat sterilized water either over a stove or the fire to wash silverware or make hot chocolate. The coffee percolators are clearly to make coffee so the campers start their day off strong.

Cookware

Cookware

When cooking for more than one or two people, a camp set can be utilized, which is a matching set of plates or silverware or cookware. These camp sets come in different colors and materials. Cookware is oftentimes heavy and awkward to carry but bringing camp sets and cookware along with food to cook is better than eating freeze-dried food and drinking from hydration packs. If the campers have a Dutch oven or a stove then cookware consists of pots, frying pans, kettles, saucepans and utensils. When the fire is the only tool for cooking, cookware requires only a pan that can be heated over the fire.

Common cookware consists of skillets, woks, deep frying pots, roasting systems and varieties of pots and pans. Each of these types of cookware serves certain functions during camp cooking.

Dutch Ovens

Dutch Ovens
Dutch Ovens

Dutch ovens, or camp ovens, are cast iron or aluminum barrels with three legs. The lids of dutch ovens contain rims and coals can be housed on the lid itself. The lid attaches tightly to the barrel which also has coals, therefore creating an evenly warming environment which is ideal for slow cooking. The different types of meals one can create with a dutch oven are baked, steamed, fried, roasted or poached to name a few.

Aluminum dutch ovens are often preferred to cast iron because they are significantly lighter to carry and also easy to clean. Aluminum does not cause rust over time so that fact is an added bonus. Cast iron dutch ovens are still big sellers though, because of the quality meal they produce. Dutch ovens are becoming very popular among cooking camping equipment.

Griddles

Another option for cookware is to use a griddle, which executes some of the same functions that a stove can. Using a griddle provides weight and space conservation. Griddles work for any meal and can be easily and safely transported. The best thing about griddles is that they are significantly easier to clean after use. Making pancakes and then eggs and then burgers with little to no clean up is a perk of the griddle.

Mess Kits

Mess Kits

Mess kits are a part of outdoor gear which contains compact collections of silverware and cookware used while outdoors away from full fledged kitchens. One can purchase mess kits for one person, two people or more. A one person mess kit commonly contains a skillet, a kettle, a plate, a cup and utensils for eating. Mess kits fit these items neatly in a nested fashion and contained in a stuff sack.

Pots & Pans

Pots & Pans

Pots and pans are essential on a camping trip. Boiling of water, heating of leftovers and making hefty meals can be done easily with a good set of pots and pans. Cookware is oftentimes heavy and awkward to carry but bringing a simple set of pots and pans can solve the problem with heavy equipment. If the campers have a Dutch oven or a stove then cookware consists of pots, frying pans, kettles, saucepans and utensils. When the fire is the only tool for cooking, cookware requires only pots and pans that can be heated over the fire.
The variations of pots and pans can be used for specific types of cooking; these common cookware variations consist of skillets, woks, deep frying pots, roasting systems and varieties of specialized pots and pans. Each of these types of cookware serves certain functions during camp cooking.

Stoves

Stoves

Camping stoves are portable and designed to be lightweight for ease of transporting to the final destination such as a campsite. Portable stoves are classified by the type of fuel used for camp cooking. A simple single burner stove that uses solid or liquid fuel is becoming increasingly popular as a result of campfires being restricted at some sites and the demand for lightweight camping equipment. These stoves are lit by igniting the fuel placed in the burner and will remain lit until the fuel runs out.

Another single burner stove which is more complex in design is the pressurized stove which burns volatile liquid fuel that can be a mixture of a variety of liquids. This type of stove is much heavier than the simple design but heats food much quicker.

Gas stoves come in single or multi-burner styles and are comparable to kitchen stoves. It is possible to regulate the amount of heat the stove is producing with the many controls available.

Another option for cookware is to use a griddle, which executes some of the same functions that a stove can. Using griddles is a weight and space conservation.

Water Treatment

Water Treatment
Water Treatment

Water treatment is the process of making a water source worthy and safe to drink. Water found in the wilderness contains contaminants that are unsafe for people to drink without purifying it. Contaminants that are drawn out of hazardous water are bacteria, fungi and various types of man-made pollutants. The level of purification can vary, and the water is never 100% pure so the end result is subject to the person’s requirement or desire. Water treatment tablets are used to purify water before drinking when in the wilderness. They do not take up much space and are easy to use so water treatment tablets make for convenient outdoor gear that can be stored easily in any backpack or hydration pack.
