There are a multitude of types of kayaks for different applications of outdoor activities. Kayaks are used by families on vacation, friends on a camping trip, fisherman, scuba divers, etc. A type of leisure kayak is called a ‘sit-on-top.’ These kayaks come in either a one-person or two-person design and are popular for fishing and touring because the design permits moving around and changing positions in and out of the boat. The name of the design explains the type of kayak – the seat of the boat is located above the water level, which makes the center of gravity of the traveler higher than in a traditional kayak. In order to compensate for this, the boat is wider; thus, the boat does not have the same lines and cannot travel as quickly as a conventional kayak.
A particular type of ‘sit-on-top’ kayaks is an inflatable kayak. The inflatable kayak is made of a specially coated cloth that can be inflated using a manual or electric pump. These kayaks use very low air pressure and as well as being affordable, they are also extremely safe. The level of excitement and adventure, however, may be compromised, as the inflatable kayak does not move quickly. Inflatable kayaks take a lot of effort to paddle, but they are relatively stable and not difficult to become skilled at maneuvering.
The biggest gains of inflatable kayaks are their storage opportunities and portability. There are many compartments in an inflatable kayak, providing safe and waterproof storage for outdoor gear, backpacks and camping supplies that could be helpful on a kayaking trip. Hydration packs and freeze-dried food could be stored in the small compartments of the kayak for emergencies. The fact that they are portable is a great gain for hikers. Instead of needing to strap a conventional kayak to a truck bed and drive down to the river just to get in the water, an inflatable kayak can be carried in a stuff sack or another easily portable case and blown up by the water. |
